The SproutChefs had an apple tasting and made individual-sized recipes in class. Below I have two recipes for apple crunch. The first one is for the family-sized apple crunch and the second one is for the individual serving size that we made in class.
Grocery list
6 apples
flour
Rolled oats
Brown sugar
Cinnamon
Butter
Cooking spray
Equipment Needed
A copy of the Apple crumble recipe, copied and pasted into the text and font size easiest for your child to read. Recipe to follow, in the next section.
A 9" pie pan or baking pan (For individual, use a 6" pie pan)
Apple peeler, or a sous-chef willing to help peal and cut up the apples
An oven heated to 375 degrees
Cooking mitts or hot pads
A pastry knife or two knives
Family Sized Apple Crunch Recipe
Ingredients:
6 large apples, pealed and cut with the apple peeler/corer/slicer, or have the sous-chef cut up by hand
1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup rolled oats
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Peal and cut apples.
Put apples into baking pan; set aside.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon.
Cut butter into flour and oat mixture with the pastry cutter or two knives, until crumbly.
Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until fruit is bubbly and topping is golden brown.
Option: Serve hot with ice cream.
Individual Apple Crunch Recipe
Ingredients:
1 large apple, pealed and cut into small pieces
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons oats
1 1/2 tablespoons soft butter
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 nutmeg
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Grease a 6" pie pan.
2. Peal and cut the apple into bite sized pieces and put in greased pie pan.
3. Combine flour, oats, brown sugar nutmeg and
cinnamon into a bowl.
4. Cut butter into flour and oat mixture, until crumbly. Do not over mix. .
5. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples.
6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until fruit is
bubbly and topping is golden brown.
Option: Serve hot with ice cream or serve for breakfast.
