Cooking classes for kids

Fall/Winter 2023-2024 Classes

To sign up for a class, click on the links below to register through Darien Parks and Rec. Each session of classes will focus on seasonal ingredients, holidays, current trends, and the class’s particular interests. All classes are hands-on.  

All Darien Parks and Recreation classes are offered in the Paddle Hut at Weed Beach, unless otherwise indicated.

September - March

Preschooler Second Tuesday.

Offered the second Tuesday of every month

Children ages 2 1/2 - 5 years and their significant adult will work together to make the following treats.

Fee: $38 for each class. Price include child and adult together.

Savory and Sweet, Fall’s Harvest Cooking Class

Savory and Sweet, Fall’s Harvest Cooking Class

Mondays, October 9, 16 and 23  -4:00-5:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

Each week SproutChefs will prepare something savory or sweet, using fresh fall ingredients with a fall or Halloween theme.

Fee: $144.

Offered Sundays, October 15 or 22, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

All ages

Each session SproutChefs will prepare something with a Halloween theme.

In the Stone Hut at Tilley Pond Park.

Stone Soup Series

Mondays, November 13, 20, 27 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

As the days get colder and darker there is nothing better than hot soup and a good book.  The SproutChefs will hear a stone soup story each week and make soups from four different cultures.  They will bring all the recipes home, along with the knowledge of how to make it for the family.

Fee: $144.

Family Thanksgiving Pie Making

Tuesday, November 21st  4:00–5:00 p.m.

All Ages.

The entire family is invited to make either 9 1/2” pumpkin, sweet potato and/or pecan pies in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Pies will be assembled in the Paddle Hut and baked at home. Grandparents are especially welcome.

Fee: Each pie is $45.

Sweet Treats for the Holidays

Mondays, December 4, 11, and 18, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

The SproutChefs will make a chocolate peppermint pie, decorate holiday-themed cookies and end the class by icing and decorating a cake.  All treats will come home to share.

Edible Valentines

Monday, February 12th  4:00-5:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

Delicious sugar cookies, along with pastry bags, candies and sprinkles will be provided for each pastry chef to make about 20 small cookie Valentines to keep or give away.

Winter Camp: Fairytales and Recipes

February 19-23rd 10:00 a.m -2:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

This week is all about having fun and being creative with words and food.  The first day is planned, but all the other days after that will be tailored to fit the participants’ abilities and interests.  The campers will spend each day making their own lunch and creating their own cookbook to take home at the end of the week.

Mondays: March 4, 11, 18 and 25 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

The chefs will visit Japan, Italy, China and Mexico via their taste buds. They will make and eat the cuisines of those four countries.  Any leftovers will come home.

A SproutChefs’ Day in Italy

Friday, March 29, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Kinder - 6th grade

The SproutChefs will break into three groups and spend the day creating their own fresh handmade pasta lunches.   After lunch, they will  share what they liked best about each group’s creations.  Their selection of ingredients will be seasonal and fresh, except for optional cans of tomato sauce.  Desserts will also be created.
